Point Loma is a lush peninsula featuring tree-lined streets, architecturally impressive homes, marinas, and yacht clubs. It is bordered on the west and south by the Pacific Ocean, to the east by San Diego Bay, and to the north by the San Diego River. The history of Point Loma contains a strong tradition of the sea. Point Loma means “hill point” in Spanish. Standing on the beach in Coronado your eye is drawn to this long jut of land that reaches far out into the Pacific Ocean. Point Loma has several diverse residential areas, including the Wooded Area, the La Playa beach section, Shelter Island, Sunset Cliffs, and Loma Portal. In addition to its charming and distinctive residential communities, Point Loma has a strong military presence with two major military bases, a national cemetery, a national monument, and a naval base. It is also home to a university.
